Like everyone else, I have been following the travesty of Haiti’s earthquake, more sick to my stomach with each new detail about the devastation and more near tears with each new image of hungry, thirsty, exhausted people. I want to go there and help myself, but since I can’t currently, some thoughts on how those of us left at home can help:
- Donate to one of the following: UNICEF (1-800-4UNICEF), Yele Haiti, Red Cross, World Food Program, Mercy Corps (1-888-256-1900), Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders.
- Simply texting “HAITI” to 90999 donates $10 to Red Cross relief efforts.
- Eat out: Restaurants in New York and various other cities are donating some of their profits to the Haiti relief fund. Find somewhere to eat this weekend here.
- Shop: The already “do-gooding” company, Proud Mary, that offers fair trading company is donating 50% of each gorgeous bag purchased online this weekend.
- Check out a list of other fundraisers, or start your own.
